EUR/JPY fell from its year-on-year highs under the influence of trade tensions and overbought signals

The euro (EUR) versus the Japanese yen (JPY) fell, falling back to its year-high of 172.28 on Wednesday, as new concerns over possible U.S. tariffs against Japan increased.

The euro/JPY pair ended up experiencing resistance after seven consecutive weeks of gains and a rebound of more than 10% since March. Market participants have already priced upbeat, but the pair has fallen below 172.00 as trade tensions and central bank differences regain the focus.

Traders are now closely watching ongoing negotiations between the United States, the European Union and Japan.

Tariff threats and trade tensions have heightened uncertainty in Europe and Japan

On Monday, President Trump said a formal letter detailing the new tariff measures would be issued within two days, sparking speculation that the EU may receive the letter on Wednesday.

German Chancellor Friedrich Meers addressed lawmakers on Wednesday, expressing hopes of a swift trade deal with the United States, ideally reducing tariffs on both sides.

At the same time, the United States is advancing plans to implement reciprocal tariffs starting in August. This has rekindled concerns about global cost impacts, especially for industries such as automotive, steel and aluminum.

For policy makers, risks are rising.

Higher tariffs may drive inflation, which is particularly relevant in Japan, as consumer prices are already close to the Bank of Japan’s target.

Support is near 170.93, the 78.6% Fibonacci retracement level of the July-August 2024 downtrend, followed by the 20-day Simple Moving Average (SMA) 168.89. If it falls below these levels, a 61.8% retracement level of 167.40 may be exposed.

In the upward trend, if the psychological level of 173.00 is exceeded, it may attract the attention of the July 2024 high of 175.43. But bulls may need a basic catalyst, such as a favorable trade deal, to further rise from here.

Overall, the technical situation shows that while the broader bullish trend remains intact, short-term momentum may have stretched, and there may be a pause or correction unless trade-related headlines provide further boost.
