The euro (EUR) continued to rise against the Japanese yen (JPY) on Friday, rebounding from a two-day downward trend as the yen generally weakened among major currency pairs. The euro/yen crossover has been in strong trading for the past seven weeks, supported by ongoing policy divisions between the European Central Bank (ECB) and the Bank of Japan (BoJ).
In the US trading session, the euro/JPY crossover rose slightly. At the time of writing, the trade was around 172.40, which is the level since July 17, 2024, marking a new high for the year. The pair rose 0.67% on the day, supported by a widespread weakening of the yen and continued bullish momentum, especially as policy divisions continue between the European Central Bank (ECB) and the Bank of Japan (BoJ).
The ECB has firmly turned to a cycle of interest rate cuts as inflation shows more obvious signs of a decline, moving towards its 2% target. While the ECB aims to balance price stability with economic growth, recent statements suggest that the current rate cut cycle may be nearing its end, acknowledging that uncertainty remains, especially due to factors that stem from global trade policy. On the other hand, the Bank of Japan has taken a more cautious approach to policy normalization, maintaining the benchmark interest rate at 0.50% since January. The Bank of Japan has also announced a gradual reduction in Japan's Treasury bond (JGB) purchases, indicating a slow exit of stimulus measures while focusing on maintaining a healthy wage-price cycle. This divergence in pace and direction continues to drive up momentum for the euro/yen crossover.
Technically, the euro/yen maintained its bullish trajectory during the U.S. session on Tuesday, trading around 172.40. The pair is on the rising 20-day simple moving average(SMA) is well supported and is currently at 169.42, which is also used as the centerline of the Bollinger Band. The pair continues to approach the upper boundary of the Bollinger band, reflecting the continued upward action energy. The recent breakthrough of the 170.00 psychological mark further strengthened the bullish structure, with no immediate signs of weakness.
Momentum indicators further support bullish bias. The relative strength index (RSI) is 72.85, indicating an overbought state but no reversal signal has been sent, indicating that the buying pressure remains. The average direction index (ADX) is rising, currently at 43.72, indicating a strong trend.
In the downward direction, the immediate support is at the psychological threshold of 170.00, followed by the middle Bollinger band close to 169.50. As long as these levels are held, the overall bias will still tend to rise, and the range of 173.00-174.00 may be tested in the future.
