On Tuesday, the euro continued to rise in its third consecutive trading day against the yen, with the euro/yen climbing to 173.00 during the U.S. session – the highest level since July 12, 2024. The pair is supported by continued weakness in the yen as it struggles amid widespread interest rate differences, the U.S. re-threatening tariffs and rising inflationary pressures driven by imports.
The Bank of Japan (BOJ) is very cautious about a sharp rate hike, despite inflation still above the 2% target. Policymakers remain cautious, pointing to fragile domestic demand and increased global uncertainty. The pressure on the yen is intensifying as Japan faces growing political uncertainty ahead of the July 20 Senate election, with polls showing the ruling coalition likely to lose its majority.
This raises concerns about the direction of fiscal policy and limits the flexibility of the Bank of Japan as it hopes to avoid introducing volatility in the early stages of sensitive elections. Investors also consider the risk of increased government spending after the election, which could further expand the country’s already massive debt burden. Therefore, market sentiment continues to be bad for the yen, keeping the euro/yen near its highest level in more than a year.

Industrial production rose 1.7% month-on-month in May, reversing the sharp decline of 2.2% in April and significantly exceeding the expected 0.9% increase. On an annual basis, output surged by 3.7%, the fastest growth rate since the beginning of 2023.
At the same time, market sentiment in the euro zone rebounded slightly. ZEW Economy in JulyThe confidence index rose slightly to 36.1, up from 35.3 last month. Although it failed to meet the market expectations of 37.8, a slight improvement indicates that investor confidence has remained stable overall.
From a technical point of view, the euro/yen continues to rise, trading close to the 173.00 level. According to the Fibonacci retracement instrument mapped from the July-August 2024 decline, the pair has broken through the 78.6% retracement level of 170.91 and now serves as a key support zone. The daily chart structure remains bullish, with currency pairs continuing to hit higher highs and higher lows.
The momentum indicator further strengthened the uptrend, with the average direction index (ADX) rising to 46.42, indicating a strong trend. However, the Relative Strength Index (RSI) is 75.16, indicating that the pair is in an overbought zone, suggesting a possible pause or pullback in the short term.
If the current bullish momentum continues, the EUR/JPY is expected to test the 100% Fibonacci forecast close to 175.36, which is the next key upside target. However, a short-term callback to the 170.90-171.00 area is not impossible given the overbought RSI reading. The area now serves as the first line of defense for the bulls, with deeper support around 167.50-168.00. As long as the pair remains above these levels, the overall uptrend remains intact, a pullback may be seen as a buying opportunity.
