During the European trading session on Monday (October 27), light crude oil futures fell by more than 1% due to the dual pressure of bearish technical signals and improving geopolitical sentiment. West Texas Intermediate crude oil failed to break above the 61.8% Fibonacci level of $62.41 and subsequently fell below the 50-day moving average resistance at $62.17. This move opened the door for further losses, and traders are now targeting the next downside target in the retracement range of $59.94 to $58.41. Last week’s rally had pushed futures closer to breakout levels, but the failure to break through key resistance levels stalled bullish momentum. If WTI crude oil can rebound and regain its moving average, market attention may return to the recent high of $62.59 and may test the long-term 50% retracement level of $63.74.
The Sino-US trade agreement framework eases demand concerns
The overall background also puts pressure on crude oil sentiment. China and the United States reached a preliminary trade agreement, reducing concerns about shrinking demand due to the long-term economic conflict. U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent confirmed that the two sides have developed a "substantial framework" to avoid the implementation of 100% tariffs and suspend China's export restrictions on rare earths.
The de-escalation reduces the urgency to find alternative supply routes and purchase discounted Russian crude. But analysts warn that if sanctions against Russia fail to significantly curb its crude oil exports, the oversupply problem may reappear. Haitong Securities pointed out that weak implementation of sanctions may lead Russia to increase discounts and use a "shadow fleet", thereby weakening the effect of sanctions.
EuropeInternal disagreements within OPEC and Iraqi production have become the focus
At the same time, Iraq's oil minister said that the country is negotiating on its OPEC production quota. Although Iraq's crude oil production capacity reaches 5.5 million barrels per day, its current OPEC quota is 4.4 million barrels per day. Iraq, OPEC's biggest overproducer, has submitted plans to cut production after output exceeded agreed levels earlier this year.
Monday’s relevant statements highlighted the fragile internal balance of OPEC as it shifts towards regaining market share.
