The British pound (GBP) strengthened slightly against the Japanese yen (JPY) on Friday as the yen was under widespread pressure amid a new round of trade-related uncertainty. Earlier this week, U.S. President Donald Trump announced a 25% tariff on all Japanese imports, which is scheduled to take effect on August 1. The announcement has disturbed global markets and weakened the traditional hedging appeal of the yen. Against this backdrop, the pound/yen is expected to achieve weekly gains, supported by the continued weakness of the yen and strong bullish momentum.

At press time, the pair traded around 199.10, up 0.35% intraday, after briefly hitting the intraday high of 199.45. The cross-currency pair is well supported above its 20-day simple moving average, which also acts as an intermediate Bollinger band, further consolidating its role as dynamic support. As prices remain near the highs this year, the overall technical structure continues to be bullish, and the continued buying interest maintains the integrity of the uptrend.

From the trend-following perspective, the GBP/JPY has established a consistent high and low rising pattern, following the boundaries of the upward channel. As long as the pair remains above the key support level of 197.50, and the 20-day simple moving average provides short-term dynamic support, the outlook remains positive. If it continues to fall below this level, it may pave the way for a move toward 195.50 near the July 4 low.

The real-time resistance is at 199.45 (the intraday high), followed by the upper Bollinger band at 199.97 and the key psychological barrier at 200.00.

Momentum indicators continue to widely support the upward trend. Relative Strength Index (RSI) remains at 60Around .70, www.xmhouses.comfortable above the neutral 50, but still below the overbought area, indicating that there is room for further uptick before the momentum overheated. Meanwhile, moving average convergence/divergence (MACD) continues to show a positive bias. The MACD line is still higher than the signal line, although the histogram begins to flatten, suggesting that the momentum may slow down if the buyer fails to break through the next resistance zone.

In the short term, the technical picture tends to rise further as long as the pair remains above the support range of 197.50-198.00. However, traders may want to keep an eye on price movements around 200.00, as overbought signals and profit-taking settlements may limit gains. The broader direction may still be related to geopolitical developments, especially around U.S.-Japan trade relations and possible retaliation measures in Tokyo.
