Australian dollar/USD may further rise to key resistance levels, China's inflation data supports Australian dollar

Australia dollar was the strongest major currency against the US dollar during the European session on Wednesday (September 10). The current upward momentum of the Australian dollar/USD is also due to the fact that China's latest key inflation data in August has increased market confidence in the Chinese economy.

China's core CPI further rebounded to positive growth range

China is Australia's key trading partner. If China's consumption demand for Australian mineral raw materials increases, it is likely to put upward pressure on the Australian dollar.

China's overall consumer price index (CPI) performance in August was lower than expected, falling from flat in July to -0.4% year-on-year, but the core CPI, excluding food and energy prices, further rebounded from 0.8% year-on-year in July to 0.9% in August, continuing to maintain positive growth.

Overall, since China's core CPI recorded -0.1% year-on-year in February 2025, the indicator has continued to show an upward trend in the past six months. It is worth noting that the long-term trend of the Australian dollar/USD is directly related to China's core CPI trends.

The positive trend of China's core CPI is expected to boost consumer confidence. If market confidence rebounds, it may drive China's demand for Australian mineral raw materials to increase, thereby forming a positive feedback loop, providing support for the Australian dollar to further strengthen.

Technical Analysis

Australia/USD continues to gain support above the 0.6500 mark and starts a new round of rise. The Australian dollar/USD broke through the 0.6550 and 0.6580 marks and entered the upward range.

From the 1-hour chart, the currency pair has stood firm in the 20th simple moving average and 50th periodsAbove the simple moving average. Previously, the price even rose to around 0.6615 for a while, and then encountered some resistance.

The Relative Strength Index (RSI) successfully rebounded at the parallel rising support level, indicating that short-term bullish momentum was not damaged. Since April 22, 2025, the Australian dollar/USD has been operating in the medium-term "expansion wedge" pattern, with the upper edge/resistance level of this pattern in the range of 0.6660-0.6700.

Upported space

From the upward direction, the pair may face resistance around 0.6620. The first major resistance faced by the bulls is 0.6640. If the closing price breaks through 0.6640, it may lay the foundation for further rise. Under this circumstance, the Australian dollar/USD may rise to 0.6720. After breaking through this level, the bulls may be expected to launch an impact towards 0.6850.

If the rise continues, the price may even advance towards 0.6900.

Downside space

From the downside direction, the instant support level is 0.6575, and the next key focus may be 0.6550. Meanwhile, a key bullish trend line is forming on the 1-hour chart, with support at 0.6540.

The trend line is close to the 61.8% Fibonacci retracement level of the upward trend from the low of 0.6501 (short-term swing low) to the high of 0.6619 (short-term swing high). If the decline continues, the price may fall to around 0.6510.
