GBP/USD falls into consolidation ahead of key central bank resolution

On Thursday (September 11), the pound/dollar exchange rate fluctuated in a narrow range around US$1.3521, and the trend was limited. The market is currently awaiting key U.S. inflation data, as well as a major policy meeting to be held by the Federal Reserve and the Bank of England next week.
The pound has gradually recovered from the sell-off wave in early September. Previously, concerns over UK fiscal sustainability led to the pound falling to monthly lows, while pushing UK long-term Treasury yields to its highest level since the late 1990s.
One of the reasons pound has gained support is that investors expect the Bank of England to avoid a sharp rate cut—especially as other major central banks such as the Fed turn to loose policies. Another support factor is the high inflation in the UK: the country's inflation rate remains at its highest level in the G7 (G7), with the stickiness of rising prices in the service sector and wage growth being particularly significant.
Latest data show that the UK economy is showing resilience despite persistent inflationary pressures and weak labor markets. Against this backdrop, British Chancellor Rachel Reeves is facing increasing pressure to maintain fiscal stability without violating government lending rules. The market will closely monitor the next budget report released in November this year.
Technical Analysis
On the 4-hour chart, the GBP/USD has opened a pullback since the recent high of US$1.3590, and the exchange rate may further fall to the support level near 1.3420. If the pullback ends, the exchange rate may rebound from the support level, and a new round of upward trend will be launched: the initial resistance level is US$1.3548, and it is expected to retest 1.3 after the breakthrough.The upfront high of $590.
MACD indicator (exponential smooth moving averages) also supports this view: although the histogram and signal lines are still above the zero axis, both are showing a downward trend, indicating that in the overall consolidation pattern, action energy is in the short-term existence.
On the 1-hour chart, the GBP/USD has tested the $1.3517 level and is still in the pullback stage. The short-term downward target is the support level of US$1.3485. If it falls below this level, the pullback may further expand, pointing to a deeper support area.
In the stochastic indicator KDJ, the J value is at a relatively high level and there is signs of a decline. There may be adjustment pressure in the short term, but there is still upward momentum overall.
Conclusion
The current market is preparing for next week's central bank resolution, and the GBP/USD exchange rate is cautious. Although the Bank of England's relatively hawkish policy expectations and high inflation still support the pound, the exchange rate direction may be determined by two factors in the short term: one is the tone of the Federal Reserve's policy statement, and the other is the subsequent fiscal trends of the UK.
From a technical point of view, the pound/dollar is in a short-term pullback. If the key support level can be held, this pullback may provide investors with buying opportunities.
